Clinical Evaluation of A Wearable Artificial Kidney

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The University of Utah's Artificial Organs Division has been experimenting with a Wearable Artificial Kidney (W AK) since 1973. This work has been funded by an NIH-NIAMDD-75-8 grant and private funds. The advantage of this type of machine over conventional dialysis machines is mostly one of psychological effect on the patient. Patients feel tied to the machine for the great lengths of time they are dialyzed and are unable to perform some of their duties and responsibilities; so the trend has been toward smaller, more compact, portable machines. (Figure 1.) This gives the patient a sense offreedom even though he or she still must be dialyzed. If the patient has the capability of moving about, performing his daily task while on dialysis, he can gain further freedom from the machine.

Wearable artificial kidney (WAK) has undergone clinical trials with results comparable to those of standard hemodialysis. Although they could have been excellent programs to rehabilitate End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients and show them that despite their kidney problems, they could still enjoy the life. Unfortunately they were inconvenient due to different reasons, one of which includes th...
متن کاملThe future of the artificial kidney: moving towards wearable and miniaturized devices.
New directions in dialysis research include cheaper treatments, home based therapies and simpler methods of blood purification. These objectives may be probably obtained with innovations in the field of artificial kidney through the utilization of new disciplines such as miniaturization, microfluidics, nanotechnology. This research may lead to a new era of dialysis in which the new challenges a...
متن کاملA wearable artificial kidney for patients with end-stage renal disease.
BACKGROUND Stationary hemodialysis machines hinder mobility and limit activities of daily life during dialysis treatments. New hemodialysis technologies are needed to improve patient autonomy and enhance quality of life. METHODS We conducted a FDA-approved human trial of a wearable artificial kidney, a miniaturized, wearable hemodialysis machine, based on dialysate-regenerating sorbent techno...

The wearable artificial kidney (WAK) is a device that allows prolonged and frequent dialysis treatments for patients with end stage renal disease. It potentially provides a practical and feasible solution to satisfy the need for an optimal delivered dialysis. Until now, the WAK has already been presented in several models, proposing different therapeutic modalities and engineering approaches. T...
